Psychotherapy training programs offered in Toronto, such as the Toronto Institute for Relational Psychotherapy, has personal therapy requirements as part of the training process.
Therapeutic work in self-awareness and the need to have understanding of the ‘Safe and Effective Use of Self’ are established requirements for membership to professional associations and to the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario.
Having been engaged in the psychotherapy process both before and during my own training, I understand and have the experiential knowledge to support you during your training. I also feel a special importance to providing support and care for those working and training in the service of the well-being of others.
In addition, participants of a study of psychotherapists engaged in personal therapy work view their personal therapy as a valuable and powerful experience with a long-term personal impact and ongoing influence on therapeutic practice.
Considerations favouring personal psychotherapy include: better empathy, understanding countertransference and the unconscious, experiential knowledge of theory through experiencing it first hand, the ability to know how one’s own defenses that may interfere with the therapeutic process.
